Wayne State will organize a 100-mile bike ride fundraiser through Detroit this summer as part of a scholarship fundraiser for "economically disadvantaged" students, according to WSU President M. Roy Wilson.

The fundraiser, which will be held on Aug. 22, 2015, is being dubbed "The Baroudeur," or "The Warrior" in French. President Wilson said in a statement that it's a term used for audacious riders who are not afraid to break away from a group.

Michael Brinich, associate director of communications for WSU, said they're expecting 1,000 participants.

"It was President Wilson's idea," said Brinich. "He is an avid cycler."

Participation is open to anyone 18 or older, according to Brinich. WSU students are also encouraged to join a route to learn more about Detroit and surrounding communities.

"One of the ways my wife Jacqueline and I have gotten to know Detroit and Michigan is by participating in cycling events around the state," Wilson said in a statement.

The fundraiser offers five routes ranging from 20 miles to 100 miles, including routes to Belle Isle, Palmer Park, the Old Michigan Central Station and Grosse Ile.

President Wilson says the fundraiser is for "fun", but does advise training. He hopes the inaugural event will continue in the future.

"We [are] passionate about ensuring that economically disadvantaged students have an opportunity to pursue a college degree," Wilson said in a statement.

He adds that one dollar from each entry goes to the League of Michigan Bicyclists to "increase the safety of bicyclists." Net proceeds will go toward student scholarships, according to a WSU statement.

Students say they're happy to see a variation in fundraising programs.

"I think it's a unique idea," said Nathan Brant, freshman biomedical engineering major. "It's nice to see [the university] encourage more student involvement instead of the traditional formal galas they usually do."

Brant says he will consider participating in the fundraiser.

"I like how the money will go to students who actually need it," Brant said. "That's what fundraisers should be for."
